Why the Blue-Ringed Octopus?

Found in shallow Indo-Pacific reefs from Australia to Japan, the Greater Blue-Ringed Octopus is an aposematic superstar. Aposematism (ap-oh-suh-MAT-ism) is the scientific word for "warning coloration," nature's way of saying "back off, I'm dangerous." When blue ringed octos feel threatened, muscle contractions expose iridophores under their skin, flashing brilliant blue rings in under a third of a second. One of the fastest warning signals in the entire animal kingdom!

Why Every Purchase Matters

OctoNation is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit and the world's largest octopus fan club. 100% of profits fund Octopedia, our growing species profile library helping people fall in love with the various species of octopus on Earth!

Welcome to the club.
